2017 Provincial Championship
WRBA sent 8 boxers to the 2016 Golden Gloves Tournament.
Our first Boxer to fight was Isaac Toleff. He resides out of Cambridge, ON. Isaac is 15 years of age and he is fighting at 44-46 KG weight class. Isaac weighed in at the 44 KG mark and was ready to step into the ring. Unfortunately his opponent came in over weight and did not qualify for the weight division. Isaac won the Gold medal Via walkover.
Devin Mechalko was the second boxer to fight on the Thursday night. Devin is 15 years of age and resides in New Hamburg, ON. Both Devin and his opponent weighed in at the 52 KG mark. Devin fought a hard three round contest. unfortunately at the end of the third round the judges awarded the unanimous contest to Devin’s opponent.
William Yolcano was the third boxer to step into the ring for WRBA. William is 14 years old and resides in Kitchener, ON. Will weighed in at the 48 KG mark. He fought a great first round giving is opponent a standing 8 count in the first round. unfortunately Will decided to brawl with his opponent and dropping the next two rounds. Will lost the fight with a 1-2 decision.
Jason Marquez was our 4th boxer to fight in the tournament. Jason is 17 years of age and he lives in Guelph, ON. Jason fought twice in the tournament both times coming in on weight at Youth Novice 60 KG. His first fight was a tight technical battle. Jason battled hard and pulled off a nail biter of a split decision. The second fight was for the Gold medal fight. Jason put everything he had into his fight and came out with a unanimous decision victory claiming the Ontario Championship.
Justin Marquez was the fifth boxer to participate in the tournament. Justin is 16 years old and lies in Guelph, ON. Justin fought twice in the tournament. Both fights were at the 54 KG mark. Justin’s first fight was an easier contest. Justin out moved, and out worked his opponent cruising to a unanimous victory. Justin’s second match was a little tougher. He was the better fighter, but was frustrated by his opponents height advantage. Justin couldn’t pull out the victory dropping a unanimous decision.
Ali Najafi was the sixth boxer for Waterloo. Ali is 24 years of age and is living in Kitchener, ON. Ali came in at 60 KG. Ali only had one fight in the tournament. He was against a taller opponent and handled it like a pro. Ali swarmed the bigger boxer and overwhelmed him. In the second round Ali stopped the taller fighter with two standing 8 counts. Ali would bring home the gold medal for the Elite Novice 60 KG division.
Last but not least is our two national champions. Katelyn Vanderlaan, and Tatianna Antunes. Both of our girls worked hard to get to the required weight. Unfortunately there were no opponents for either girl. Both girls won the division by walk over.
